my neuroaffirming approach to care
I Have Always Been at Home in
the Forest.
My love of nature was instilled in me from birth. As a child of hippie parents, my early years were spent living on a converted school bus, bathing in creeks, and milking goats!
Growing up in the Midwest, I embraced the traditions of my Irish and Lithuanian ancestors, living close to the land, gardening, foraging and honoring the healing power of the plants.
My summers were spent picking berries & mushrooms, climbing trees, tracking animals and building forts. Some of my first plant allies included red clover, wood sorrel, and violet.
Much of my early foraging and herbalism knowledge was passed down to me through my mother, who taught me how to treat bee stings naturally, how to identify numerous edible and medicinal plants, and encouraged me to appreciate the magic of nature.
The forest restored my nervous system, let me remember the power of play, and allowed me to be my true self.
Trying to Fit In:
During my teenage and early adult years, I lost myself trying to fit into the social mold of how I “should” think and behave. I gave up time in nature to study and “get ahead in life.” Yet, I always felt like I didn’t fit in, couldn’t quite keep up, and I experienced lots of stress and overwhelm.
Due to several decades of living with chronic illness and pain, I became invested in learning about the connection between mind, body, and spirit. I drew upon my anthropology degree as I considered how people from different cultures approach disease and healing in various ways.
My Menopause Experience:
Through my study of yoga, meditation and energy healing, I learned tools and strategies that served me well through periods of immense stress and difficulty.
But the stress kept coming! During my mid-late 30’s, I experienced irregular and painful periods as well as the heartbreak of secondary infertility due to early menopause. I felt the confusion, silence and shame that many others often experience during this initiatory phase of life.
During this time, the plants began calling to me, and I slowly began rebuilding my relationship to them through hiking, gardening and drinking herbal teas. I eventually answered the call to formally study herbalism, tapping into my childhood love of plants on a whole new level.
My Late-Diagnosis:
Herbal medicine opened my eyes to the mask that I was wearing for the world as I tried to fit into society’s neurotypical environment. I realized that despite my best efforts to recover from burnout, the approach I was using wasn’t a good fit. After pursuing a formal diagnosis in 2024, I learned I am neurodivergent! This awareness has uncoiled a lifetime of false beliefs and trauma, and led me deeper into my own healing.
My Philosophy:
I am still deepening my learning and building my skillset, but my vision for The Mother Hive is to create a healing arts company dedicated to neurodiversity-affirming care, where neurodiversity is seen as normal variations in human neurological function, not as a deficit, or problem to be fixed.
Midlife is a time to remove masks, reconnect to your inner child, and embrace the strengths of your neurotype.
The Mother Hive is where midlife folks come to learn practical tools to:
restore their nervous system
build their resilience to stress
restore agency in their health and wellness
The Mother Hive’s Mission:
At The Mother Hive, our mission is to help people in menopause rediscover balance and vitality through a neuroaffirming, heart-centered lens. We cultivate physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellness with herbal wisdom, holistic coaching, and gatherings that foster true community.
“Awareness is like the sun. When it shines on things, they are transformed.
